Ukraine capital cities do you know?
Kyiv is commonly known as the capital of Ukraine. Yes, it is. But there where period inhistory when another city served as Ukrainian capital. For exmaple Kharkiv and Kamyanets-Podilskiy etc. Also a few towns which are considered to be regional capitals of Ukraine or to be signifficant in some particular area, such as: culture, industry, education and so on.
So let’s figure out more about Ukraine capital cities.
Kyiv
It is the largest, busiest and probably most well known Ukrainian city. Kyiv was founded in 6th century AD and since then it served as major centre of Ukrainian history, culture,politics, ecomony and so on.
Historical capitals of Ukraine
As stated above Kiyv is the main historical capital of Ukraine. However there are a few cities which enjoyed dominant position in particular historical periods as well.
Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, was the capital of Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1919-1934. Afterwards Kyiv took over the key role. Kharkiv often is considered as students’ or educational capital of Ukraine thanks to numerous universities and other educational institutions there.
Kamyanets-Podislkyi served as the capital of short lived Ukrainian People’s Republic (1918-1920) before it was captured by Soviets. It is also know as the main city of historical Podillya region, the area of west-central Ukraine on the left bank of Dniester river in its central flow.
Lviv, major city of western Ukraine, is the historical capital of Galicia. For centuries Galicia and western Ukraine where separated from most of present day Ukrainian lands being part of Poland and Austria. Lviv also was a capital of short lived West Ukrainian People’s Republic (1918-1919). At the moment Lviv is considered to be the cultural capital of Ukraine thanks to its number of cultural events and dominant role in establishing Ukrainian identity.
Cossacks also had their state formations in 17-18 centuries. Their capitals were inChyhyryn, Baturyn and Hlukhiv. At the moment all these cities are sleepy regional towns.
The capital of Autonomous Republic of Crimea is Simferopol where venues of Crimean parliament and government are located. It worth to add that Bakhchysaray was the capital of Crimean Khaganate.
Every of administrative units of modern Ukraine – oblasts, has a capital which serves as a regional center as well but without such autonomous authority as in Crimea.
